![]() Derek Perkins's narration occasionally suffers from "accent drift," and his pronunciation of Cthulhu is a bit tortured, but on the whole he offers a solid reading. Did I mention there were pirates, too? I didn't realize this was part of a series (which includes The Mad Trist, The Quintessence of August, and Valdemar's Daughter) when I first listened to the book, but I think now I may have to read the others. ![]() What follows is a mystery-adventure that doubles as a cultural literacy test, invoking not only knowledge of Poe and Lovecraft, but also the history of the 16th-century English occultist and medium Edward Kelley (also known as Edward Talbot) and his alchemist associate John Dee, the so-called "immortal German alchemist" the Comte de Saint-Germain of the 18th century, and both Arthurian romance and Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. Stableford's novel, which is a first-person account by Dupin's friend, describes the unfolding mystery of the "Cthulhu Encryption," an inscription in the flesh of a dying mental patient who appears to be a prostitute but believes herself to be the legendary Isolde Leonys (of Tristan and Isolde fame). He encourages readers to look inside and find their inner Karl Oves. Perhaps because he is so candid and open, Knausgaard has made his memories into common property. Part of the appeal is that he has left many of the names and details unchanged you can do a Google images search and see many of the characters you read about. And yet, in Norway, one book has sold for every nine adults as translations have proliferated, readers all over the world have fallen in love with Knausgaard. ![]() There is no plot to speak of, unless you consider real life a plot. The six volumes of “My Struggle” chronicle, in hypnotic detail, episodes from Knausgaard’s life. (James Wood reviewed the first volume, in 2012.) Like my story When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth, the Masque of the Red Death has been on a lot of people’s minds lately, especially since this Guardian story of plutes fleeing to their New Zealand luxury bunkers was published. That every catastrophe must be answered with solidarity, not selfishness, if it is to be survived. They discover that humanity has a shared microbial destiny and that you can’t shoot germs. Naturally, they assume that when they do emerge, once their social inferiors have rebooted civilization, that their incredible finance-brains, their assault rifles, and their USBs full of BtC will allow them to command a harem and live a perpetual Frazetta-painting future.Īnd naturally – for anyone who’s read Poe – it doesn’t work out for them. ![]() It’s the story of a plute who brings his pals to his luxury bunker during civlizational collapse in the expectation of emerging once others have rebuilt. Things like a lightyear, or a million years can get very easily lost in words. That may seem like a long time for most of us but the universe has existed for 13.8 billion years!!! That is 13,800,000,000 years! This is such a hard concept to grasp-Big numbers like this don’t really mean much to most people.įor this reason, I must add a little disclaimer here, because my summary might miss a lot of the impact that is captured so well in the book. ![]() Our civilization has thrived only for a couple thousand years. Favorite characters from Ballet Shoes, including Madame Fidolia, Miss Jay, and Winifred, figure heavily into this story as well, but the Forbes children are very much their own personalities, and their yearning for their father who is missing in action, their uncertainty regarding their strange grandmother, and their rivalry with stuck-up cousin Miranda are the driving forces behind the plot. Though it came out eight years after Ballet Shoes, it is essentially a sequel, focusing on the same dance academy at which Pauline, Petrova, and Posy Fossil studied in the 1930s. Theater Shoes is Noel Streatfeild's fifth book for children, and it was originally published with the title Curtain Up in 1944. ![]() |
